Mr. K (aka ‘Magister Diodorus’) welcomes you to SCHOOL of LATIN, a learning website where the resources have been tested with students who don’t have regular access to a Latin teacher. They are perfect for teachers and parents of independent homeschoolers, and those who participate in homeschool co-ops, because at every level we provide self-guided instruction in reading, writing, and speaking Latin, like a classroom teacher tutoring in the home. Parents and teachers do not need to know Latin to work with students who are learning with SCHOOL of LATIN.

SCHOOL of LATIN uses the internationally-acclaimed Latin textbook series Lingua Latina per se Illustrata by Hans Ørberg. Many textbooks teach students to translate Latin. Students using those texts frequently find themselves frustrated because they can’t read Latin, they can’t write Latin, and they certainly can’t speak Latin; they’ve been trained only to “decode” Latin using a dictionary and a grammar text. LLPSI doesn’t work that way. It teaches students to read, write, and speak Latin naturally. By constantly developing their skills of inference using pictures along with the vocabulary and grammar already acquired, students naturally build new vocabulary and grammar without the need to constantly consult a dictionary and grammar guide. In this way, students move away from decoding and closer to fluency.

If you want to master Latin using one of the best textbooks in the world, but you don’t meet in a traditional classroom setting, you should try SCHOOL of LATIN’s free class. You’ll be amazed at how much you can can learn independently. In fact, after this course, we challenge you to find any student, even in an expensive, private, college-preparatory school, who can match your Latin skills.

“My nine year old daughter loves learning Latin by learning through chants and songs — it makes it fun and easy; and my ten year old son recently told me his favorite subject is Latin!”
—Nancy Hansen, homeschool parent

“My son Paolo is a freshman and is on his third year of high school Latin. He has worked independently the entire time! A huge plus for a parent who is not a Latin scholar.”
—Sara Cappello, homeschool parent

“I wasn’t so sure my then-thirteen-year-old was understanding his Latin until he scored his first gold on the National Latin Exam. He is able to achieve that level of excellence on his own! Even though my son is homeschooled, he is immersed in Latin every day because he is listening to the conversations and answering the questions back and forth in Latin as he would talk to a teacher. I feel as though he is getting the best of every world. He is now sixteen and in his fourth year of Latin. I’ve never seen anyone more committed to learning a language, and I know it’s because he is being given the tools he needs to be successful.”
—Sandi Hull, homeschool parent

Lingua Latina’s inductive approach taught me how to figure out Latin for myself, making it the perfect resource to continue my study independently.”
—Kyler Schubkegel, Junior at George Fox University
